Introduction of disability living allowance, enabling more disabled people able to claim support for some of their extra impairment-related costs.

What: The introduction of Disability Living Allowance recognises the limitations of the existing disability benefits – attendance allowance and mobility allowance – for some groups of disabled people. The new benefit is not taxed, not means-tested, and is only for those who first become disabled before they reach the age of 65.

Why significant: The new benefit will see significantly more disabled people able to claim support for some of their extra impairment-related costs.
